Our 2020 Highlights of the Year

2020 has been an unusual year to say the least, but we still have some excellent moments to share and celebrate - and we've even virtually dressed up as our favourite Dogwoof characters. Can you guess the film?

My highlight of the year is THE DOGWOOF TEAM! We've managed not only to keep going through this crazy period, but to do an outstanding job! I am beyond proud.

I loved preparing a little Christmas package for each team member as a thank you for the superb job they've done. But I can't take full credit for this, because I enlisted the help of my own daughters and even a neighbour. As you can see, they did all the hard work.

OLI HARBOTTLE

Picking up David Byrne’s American Utopia for its DVD and Blu-ray release (scheduled for next month). Having been fortunate enough to see the Broadway show back in January (although annoyingly having turned down a ticket to see it the night it was being filmed), I can’t think of a more upbeat and joyous way to kick off 2021 after the year that we’ve had since. Plus it’s Dogwoof’s first Spike Lee joint, which has to be a career highlight!

It's been a strange year for all, but there have been some top moments in both the virtual and real world space. One of my highlights of the year was hosting a bumper Dogwoof quiz for the team during Lockdown 1 to make self-isolation a tad more fun. Even the most well-read Dogwoof staff members found some of the questions challenging and it was a fun one to put together - looking forward to one IRL in 2021!

Your best home cinema experience of the year: Rewatching RBG following the sad news of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's death. I had my best big glasses on and a drink in hand demanding justice all the way!

Launching Dogwoof On Demand has been a really rewarding experience. While cinemas have reopened in certain towns and cities, we know that many people aren't quite ready to head back to the big screen. We've tried to make Dogwoof On Demand the perfect home cinema experience for doc lovers everywhere, and the response so far has been very heartening indeed!

Your tips for a great home cinema experience: get yourself a hot drink (or alcoholic beverage), a warm blanket and switch off ALL devices. There's nothin better than sinking into a really engrossing documentary at home.

JIM CHERRY

Despite 2020 being “that” year for us all, I can’t complain too much as it’s brought my second daughter, Tilly Bee Cherry into my life. I just hope the Dogwoof team will get to meet her soon.

ps. Tilly, thank you for letting me use your nursery room as my office this year :)

My highlight has been working on so many heartwarming and joyful docs during these weird times - and ending the year with The Mole Agent’s unforgettable Sergio.

Your tips for the best home cinema experience: make it a wine & cheese feast!

LUCY STEVENS

My highlight has been being able to stay connected with the team virtually throughout the year, including a team quiz and many zoom 'digi-pub' sessions.

Joining the Dogwoof family in Feb and being welcomed by an amazing team of creative, passionate individuals who are dedicated to bringing the world's best documentaries to both the big and small screen.

Dogwoof character for my virtual Christmas costume: Zeytin, the main dog in STRAY

Best home cinema experience: Watching STRAY with Bertie, my one year old westie, on a cold, damp winter's evening with a log fire crackling away in the background.

My highlight of 2020 was the amazing Q&A between Drew Dixon and Clara Amfo for the release of On The Record. It was not only in-depth but also very emotional, it really showed how much of Drew Dixon's career was snatched from her, twice. In light of that, her decision to come forward and speak her truth was so powerful and emotive.

MIKE LEEDHAM

Highlight and most impact was Of Gods And Men (2010), based on a true story. Also pertinent now that my youngest son is a bald - eyebrow less white robed buddhist.

My fav Dogwoof film has to be Honeyland, if just for Hatidze. Apart from her strength and compassion she could also teach Greta Thunberg a thing or two.
