It was another big year for Dogwoof at Sheffield Doc/Fest this year with 6 films showing, and on Sunday the festival juries presented their awards to an enrapt crowd. The festivals most prestigious prize is the Special Jury Award, which three of our titles were nominated for (The Act of Killing, Muscle Shoals and Blackfish) and we were very pleased to see this years award go to The Act of Killing.
Producer and jury spokesperson Krishan Arora said: “From its mystical beginning, this film presented to us the celebratory narrative inside people’s heads while they are committing unspeakable acts. The film leaves you asking more questions than it provides answers and is an important piece of cinema." Joshua Oppenheimer wasn't present to collect the award but his producer read out a statement on his behalf.
This makes 2013 the third year in a row that a Dogwoof title has picked up the Special Jury Award, with The Interrupters picking up the award in 2011 and Marina Abramovic The Artist is Present winning in 2012! This year Dogwoof also presented our inaugural Tim Hetherington Award (given to the film to film that best encapsulates artistry and humanity) to The Square, along with Tim's mother Judith.
