With the ongoing screenings of Speed Sisters, the Dogwoof team take a look at other badass sportswomen breaking the mould and excelling in traditionally male-dominated extreme sports…

 

The ‘Coxless Crew’

This all-female crew of adventurers undertook one of the most challenging expeditions on the planet, rowing 9,200 miles across the Pacific Ocean from the US to Australia. They spent 257 days at sea on board a pink 29ft rowing yacht. 

The expedition was to ‘generate awareness of women who face extreme adversity’ and to raise funds to support their journey towards long-term health and wellbeing. Proceeds went to breast cancer research. 

 

Kelly Clark, fearless snowboarder

Half-pipe ace Kelly Clark won 23 podiums before she was even 18. She is a four time Winter Olympian, and she has 9 Gold X Games medals. 

In 2010 she established her own foundation to ‘provide youth with the resources and opportunities they need to achieve their highest potential through snowboarding’. 

 

Clair Marie - skydiver, basejumper

She was the youngest female jumper ever at just 16 years old,  and 10 years on, she has done more than 6200 jumps. Clair describes herself as a ‘professional adventure sports athlete and passionate vegan’.

 

Young skateboarder Lizzie Armanto

At just 21 years-old, sponsored professional skateboarder Lizzie Armanto has acquired over 30 skateboarding awards. She is a native of Santa Monica, California. For 2010-2012, she placed first overall in the World Cup of Skateboarding points race.

 

Ashley Fiolek, inspiring motocross champion

Red Bull athlete Ashley Fiolek is a hugely inspiring for girls reluctant to get on a dirt bike. She has set many records in motocross, including becoming the first deaf professional racer on the women’s circuit, she also became the first deaf National winner, the first deaf WMX National Champion.

 

Not forgetting...Mary Ann Hawkins

Mary Ann Hawkins pioneered surfing for women. Between 1935 and 1941 she was the ‘darling’ of the California surf scene, winning nearly every women's surfing and paddle-boarding event she entered. This iconic female surfer won the Pacific Coast Women’s Surfboard Championship in 1938, 1939 and 1940
