Our British Female Directors

Recently the BFI wrote an article,10 Great Modern British Documentaries Directed by Women  featuring some of our favourites. Dreams of a Life, from Carol Morley; InRealLife from Beeban Kieron and Love is All from Kim Longinotto all made it onto the list. We decided to make our own Dogwoof version to pay tribute to our great British female documentarians.

Sarah Gavron (With David Katznelson) - Village at the end of the World

We released Village at the End of the World from Sarah Gavron and David Katznelson, it is rare look into a remote village in Northern Greenland with a population of 59 . Sarah Gavron has currently turned to fiction films, with her latest title Suffragette coming out in UK cinemas this September. Also from Sarah Gavron is Brick Lane which is featured in our next director's archive doc Love is All.

Kim Longinotto - Dreamcatcher, Love is All

Kim Longinotto was recently named "one of the UK's best filmmakers" by Little White Lies, and we have to agree! Earlier this year we released two films from Loningotto including Love is All, an archive look at a century of love on film. The second, Dreamcatcher saw Kim take home the Sundance Directing Award for World Cinema Documentary and is available on DVD 27th of April. Longinotto focuses on documentaries that highlight female issues and was widely praised for her films including Rough Aunties, Pink Saris and Divorce Iranian Style.

Carol Morley - Dreams of a Life, The Edge

Carol Morley is another director that has turned from documentaries in recent years, her latest fiction film The Falling is being released on Friday. We know her mainly from Dreams of a Life, a heartbreaking look at the life and death of Joyce Carol Vincent who was found dead in her apartment three years after her passing. She first turned to documentary in The Alcohol Years, based on her younger self and was nominated for a BAFTA. There was a time when we released fiction films, and Carol Morley directed The Edge which is now in an exclusive group of Dogwoof films.

Beeban Kidron - InRealLife

Beeban Kidron has a wide range of films under her name including Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason! We released her most recent film, InRealLife, an intimate look at the effect of internet on British teenagers. Kidron is also well known for starting FILMCLUB, an educational charity that sets up after-school film clubs and resulted in her receiving an Honorary Doctorate from Kingston University in 2010.
