One of the most talked about titles at January’s Sundance Film Festival will now make its UK debut as part of the Sundance London line-up. This is the second year of Sundance London and the festival will run from 25 to 28 April 2013. Blackfish has been selected as one of the 14 titles from the Sundance Film Festival. Director Gabriella Cowperthwaite will attend Sundance London and take part in a post-screening Q&A.
Blackfish explores the story of notorious performing whale Tilikum, who—unlike any orca in the wild—has taken the lives of several people while in captivity. Shocking, never-before-seen footage and riveting interviews with trainers and experts manifest the orca’s extraordinary nature, the species’ cruel treatment in captivity over the last four decades, and the growing disillusionment of workers who were misled and endangered by the highly profitable sea-park industry. This emotionally wrenching, tautly structured story challenges us to consider our relationship to nature and reveals how little we humans have learned from these highly intelligent and enormously sentient fellow mammals.
Last year, two Dogwoof titles received their UK premieres at Sundance London: The House I Live In and Chasing Ice. Both films were greeted with much critical acclaim on their UK release later in the year, and both went on to be shortlisted for the Best Documentary category at the Academy Awards! We’re expecting similar successes for Blackfish, which has already attracted worldwide interest, and will be appearing at film festivals around the world. Tickets for the film will go on sale this Friday.
