The Overnighters is a feature documentary directed by Jesse Moss. The film premiered in the US Documentary Competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Intuitive Filmmaking. The film was theatrically released by Drafthouse Films in Fall 2014. It premiered on PBS/POV in June 2015, and is currently streaming on Netflix and available globally on Itunes.
Jesse Moss is a San Francisco-based filmmaker. Most recently, he produced, directed and photographed The Overnighters, a feature documentary set in the North Dakota oilfields. The film premiered in the US Documentary Competition at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival, where it was awarded the Special Jury Prize for Intuitive Filmmaking. The film was shortlisted for the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and Moss received a Directors Guild of America (DGA) nomination for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary. The Toronto Film Critics Association, The Playlist and Nonfics named The Overnighters the top documentary of 2014. The film was theatrically released across the United States by Drafthouse Films and aired on PBS/POV in June 2015. The film is streaming on Netflix. Current projects include The Bandit, a feature documentary about 70s superstar Burt Reynolds and his friend, roommate and stunt-double Hal Needham (premiering at SXSW 2016), and short films for The New Yorker Presents, Field of Vision, Discovery and Sony Playstation. Moss has twice been a fellow of the MacDowell Colony and the Sundance Institute Documentary Film Program. He is a creative advisor at the Sundance Documentary Edit and Story Lab, a faculty member in the Department of Cinema at San Francisco State University and a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. He lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife and co-conspirator Amanda McBaine and their two children.
